From 1876, when the first effective dynamo/generator that produced a steady current of electricity was invented, Americans reacted to this new phenomenon of electricity in many different ways. Professor Jennifer Lieberman is one of the first academics to study that reaction, especially how it appeared in popular literature, both fiction and non-fiction. And in doing so, she raises a lot of very important questions about our relationships with technology and the natural world. We interview her about the cultural reactions to electricity as a new technology is the topic of this episode. Listen and be electrified!

I have recently discovered your podcast and I have really been enjoying it. Today, however, I listened to #125, with Jennifer Lieberman. And almost couldn’t listen to the entire podcast. What I have found so interesting and refreshing about your podcasts, especially theses days, is the political neutrality of your discussions.… Even when you discussed impeachments. But Mrs. Lieberman‘s politics was so palpable and distracting it kept me from enjoying the history and information provided. The egotism of her youth and her politics dampened not only my enjoyment and learning but makes me question any assertions she may make.
